ISRAEL WELCOMES NEWEST GROUP OF ETHIOPIAN-JEWISH IMMIGRANTS
i24NEWS English 2019 (2.53)
NEWS DESK | Members of the last community of Jews still living in Ethiopia have touched town in Israel. This latest immigration represents years of waiting and political infighting.
Our Asher Westropp-Evans has the story.
Story:
As a group of 82 Ethiopian-Jews landed in Israel on Monday, the first of about 1,000 to be allowed to immigrate to the country as part of an October 2018 cabinet decision, the nearly 8,000 members of the 'Falashmura' Jewish community left behind say they feel cheated.
The 'Falashmura' are Ethiopians of Jewish origin whose ancestors were compelled to convert to Christianity in the 19th century, reportedly under duress.
The community currently numbers close to 9,000 and is concentrated mainly in Addis Ababa and Gondar, the imperial city at the center of the country’s traditional Jewish heartland.
Though most members of the community have family already living in the Jewish state, and although almost all of them are practicing Jews, they are not recognized as Jewish by Israel.

ETHIOPIAN JEWRY | ISRAEL PHENOMENOLOGY
Unpacked 2020 (9.22)
This week, we look at one of Israel’s most distinctive communities - the Jews of Ethiopia.
While the story of their rescue from Ethiopia has become a well-known tale of daring, bravery and sheer Israeli chutzpah, there’s far more to know about Ethiopian Jews than this event.
We trace the origins of this group, unpack the different terms associated with the “Beta Israel” (as the community refers to itself), and discuss why there are many Ethiopians still waiting to come to Israel.
We also dive into the whole megillah of who is a Jew, and touch on the difficult subject of racism in Israeli society, as we discuss the ongoing
(and sometimes bumpy) integration of Ethiopian Jewry into Israeli society.
THE FORGOTTEN JEWS OF ETHIOPIA
Drew Binsky 2020 (8.52)
I'm back in Ethiopia for the 3rd time because it's one of my favorite countries in Africa! I am now exploring a city in the North called Gondar, and little did I know that I'd come across thousands of fellow Jews.
As you might know by now, I enjoy connecting with Jewish communities around the world, like I've done in Afghanistan, Yemen, Turkmenistan, Georgia, Philippines among many others -- but this experience has been the most eye-opening because of how alive the Jewish culture is. Some 4,000 Ethiopian Jews are here,
studying torah, keeping Shabbat and learning Hebrew.
If this is not a fascinating story, then I am not sure what is! Join me as I take you inside the world of the forgotten Jewish tribe of Ethiopia.

Did you know that there are over 125,000 Ethiopian Jews living in Israel? Do you know their culture, who they are, and where they come from? In some cities,
Ethiopian Jews now make up
as much as 17% of the population.
